From the website of Japan National Tourism Organization: Lauded as a masterpiece from the time of its creation, the characteristically Chinese style Zen garden (唐様庭園, karayō teien)of white sand is particularly famous for its azaleas (皐月, satsuki) in spring (late May) and its autumn leaves in fall (late November); coupled with the elegant sound of the bamboo shishi-odoshi (鹿威し) water feature that echoes around the garden periodically, these charming surroundings captivate a great many tourists. Also known as Jozan-ji (丈山寺) in its current incarnation as a temple of the Sōto sect (曹洞宗) of Buddhism, it has been designated as a national historic site. (Read more...)
