During the Heian era (平安時代) dog-shaped boxes called inubako (犬函) were used by the nobility as a charm to ease childbirth. This figure eventually became very popular during the Edo period (江戸時代) in the form of inu hariko (犬張子, papier-mache dogs). These talismans were used to protect infants and small children.
